Greek Islands - Santorini
The Greek Island of Santorini or Thira is a
fantastic holiday destination, with a hot sunny climate in Summer,
unique island architecture, breathtaking views and scenery, and
excellent beaches, shops and tavernas.
Santorini is a magical island, popular with cruise ships, those island-hopping on Greek ferries or arriving by air.
The island surrounds a giant caldera,
blasted away in an explosion 3,500 years ago - giving rise to the
legend of Atlantis. A trip to the archaelogical digs to visit the
remains of the original Minoan settlements, astonishingly well-perserved
with world famous wall paintings or the many later Greek ruins are a
must.
Those more interested in the beaches
won't be disappointed, with great beaches, many with black volcanic sand
and idyllic seas. Don't forget to try the local food and lava wine in
the many open air tavernas. The best way to arrive, perhaps as part of a Mediterranane Cruise , has to be on a cruise ship. The caldera is imposing and
the main town is perched on the very edge of the caldera. An exciting
way to get from the harbour up to the town is on the back of a donkey,
just make sure that the guide doesn't stick you on the back of a
single-minded mule (speaking from experience, this can be a little too
exciting if the mule decides the trip to the top is a race and all the
donkeys have to be pushed out of the way!) The Greek Island of
